La Tranquera Yerba Mate is for the big boys.
I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews in regards to this brand. But what stands out about it is that it happens to be popular in Argentina.
Now if you’ve been around the yerba mate world for some time, you know Argentina’s popular brands tend to be robust, strong, and in your face (think Taragui and Rosamonte). Well, La Tranquera is no different.
In English, this brand translates to The Gate.
And if you’re curious what’s beyond this gate, just give me 1 minute and I’ll show you in this La Tranquera Yerba Mate Review.
Nose
To the nose, La Tranquera shows off a pungent earthiness with a hint of sweetness. A mineral aroma I’ve never smelled before is present as well. But when brewing in the gourd, notes of tobacco, grass, and hay arrive. Deep, rich, and unique.
Taste
When it comes to taste, La Tranquera is bold. Your first sip is sure to knock you off your feet with its unwavering robust earthy and soil-like flavor. Undertones of oats and bread are found in the first half of the mate.
Throughout the entire cycle, you can experience essences of stone and cement – imagine walking outside after a rainy day. Subtle hints of dark chocolate hide in the background in the second half. Surprisingly, there’s no trace of smokiness.
Finish
On the finish, La Tranquera leaves behind a fresh green note. A bit of astringency hits the tip of your tongue then quickly disappears. The finish lasts no more than a minute.
Body/Texture
This yerba mate is one you can definitely feel the presence of. Heavy, thick, and potent, La Tranquera features a full body. In the beginning, the mate can be a bit grainy. But after it washes out a bit, you’re left with a silky smooth concoction of pure energy.
Cut
La Tranquera boasts a beautiful Argentine cut that almost matches the color of the packaging itself. Leaves are broadly cut with a nice dark green or brown tint. Large white palos (some brown) float around. Good dust content. Enough to leave a thick imprint on your hand and compact the yerba together. Beautiful cut.
Cycle
La Tranquera features a medium cycle. Its upfront boldness disappears after 5 refills. Although it doesn’t stay as strong throughout, the flavor is still there until around 3/4 of a liter when it then becomes completely washed out.
Effect
If you’re looking for a good pick-me-up, La Tranquera will be one of your go-to brands.
Like its taste, this mate brings its strength to its effect as well. I can feel its energy after just the first sip. This yerba hits hard and it hits fast. It’s definitely not something you want to drink later on in the day. And it’s definitely not something you want to drink a lot of in one sitting either.
It’s possible when drinking this mate to experience some jitters. But the good news is you’ll also experience extreme focus, heightened senses, and elevated mood. Just be sure to test the waters so you don’t go into overload. This mate is not something to play with.
La Tranquera is best consumed for increasing your productivity.
La Tranquera Yerba Mate Review
Although La Tranquera is not something I would drink every day, it serves its purpose when needed.
Strong yet delicious, you won’t find many brands that can do both like this one.
It may be too bold for beginner’s just getting into mate, but for more experienced materos, they can bask in its strength and unique flavor profile.
