Kurupi Menta Y Boldo is supposed to be the holy grail when it comes to tereré and the most popular brand in Paraguay. Ask anyone who drinks it and they’ll almost always point you towards this.
And for good reason…
It’s packed with flavor and is extremely refreshing especially during a hot day.
Which is why over the past two summer weeks here in New York, I’ve been drinking Kurupi like a mad man.
Below, you’re about to discover how it smells, tastes, looks, feels, and more. So if you’re wondering whether Kurupi Menta Y Boldo is worth trying, then you don’t want to miss another word…
Nose
Kurupi comes in a thin packaging stored inside a unique designed box. Once I opened it, my nose was blasted with this intense minty aroma. Although I knew it would smell like mint, I didn’t expect it to be so strong. This mate is so minty, you can literally feel a cooling of your nostrils when you sniff it. But despite its powerful presence, overall, it’s a pleasant smell mixed with a bit of earthiness. It smells nothing like yerba mate.
Taste
After steeping my gourd with ice cool water, Kurupi tastes just how it smells. On the forefront, you get this strong refreshing mintiness that can be overbearing to those who aren’t fond of mint. But hiding beneath it all is a light cream note and hushed bitterness, sweetness, and earthiness that balances everything out.
(Gourd Available Here and Bombilla Here)
Kurupi is also very linear. You won’t experience any change of notes. Your first sip will taste just like your last one. And I’m actually OK with that.
If this is your first time trying a mate like this one, don’t expect it to taste anything like what you’re used to. If I was blindfolded and given a gourd of Kurupi Menta Y Boldo, I would’ve never guessed it was yerba mate. Compare this to any other brand like Rosamonte or Taragui, and the difference is like day and night.
But how does it taste when brewed hot?
Excellent. In fact, I prefer to drink this mate hot rather than cold. The notes are the same, but the flavor is much more robust, allowing you to really taste everything this mate has to offer. Again, very minty, creamy, and a bit earthy.
Finish
On the finish, you can also expect some more mint, only this time it’s dulled down and leaves a slight tingling sensation on your palate and throat. A little bitterness from the plant is also dragged on, and faint notes of sunflower seeds start coming to the surface as well. The finish lasts around 1 minute.
Body/Texture
Kurupi Menta Y Boldo features a light body when cold, and medium body when hot. The texture can be a bit grainy at times, but other than that, it’s super smooth and almost even milky.
Cut
Kurupi Menta Y Boldo contains a Paraguayan cut. It mostly contains finely-chopped leaves (with a few coarse ones) and a large amount of dust. So dusty, that when you prepare the mate, it leaves a heavy dust imprint on your palm. White palos are sprinkled in here and there. But also like the name suggests, mixed into the blend are boldo and peppermint leaves to give it its unique taste.
When it comes to preparation, there shouldn’t be any problems. The finely cut leaves and dust should hold the mountain of mate together with ease. Just make sure you use a good spoon bombilla for the best filtration.
Cycle
Kurupi unfortunately has a short cycle. The first few refills are strong and flavorful, but after that, it loses its strength big time. Soon, you’re going to have to let your gourd steep for at least 3 minutes to get more than just a hint of mint.
Not only can this be because of the mate’s overall strength, but also because cold water takes longer to extract the flavor and nutrients from the leaves. Which is why when brewed hot, its flavor is a lot stronger and lasts a lot longer.
With the gourd pictured in this review, I can only get about 1/2 a liter with cold water and 3/4 to 1 liter with hot water.
Effect
When it comes to effect, Kurupi doesn’t do much for me.
I feel more refreshed, but its not something that’s energizing or that’ll get you up off your feet. It helps with focus and concentration, but if I wanted to improve these factors, I’d go with something more powerful which is why I like to drink Kurupi Menta Y Boldo when I’m relaxing.
Its refreshing taste couldn’t be any more perfect for it.
This mate is also great for any time of the day as its not very stimulating. Your mileage may vary, however, so keep that in mind.
Kurupi Menta Y Boldo Review
Being one of my first brands of mate that’s specially made for tereré, I couldn’t be more pleased with my choice.
Now I understand why so many people recommend Kurupi Menta Y Boldo…
It’s smooth, flavorful, and tastes great when served both hot or cold.
Not very bitter and with no smoky tones to it, this mate is suitable for materos of all experience levels. Especially beginner’s just getting into tereré.

Hey Darren, thank you for this review. I am a Dutch guy who recently moved to Paraguay. Ofcourse I had to try Terere, and I loved it right away. I am currently still drinking this Kurupi menta y boldo and I love it, eventho I have nothing to compare it to. I got here becouse i was figuring out how much caffeine is in this product, or any other similar product like theine. I managed to stop drinking koffee all together eventho i dont get the feeling that Menta y Boldo has much of these kinds of substances.
anyway, thanks for your reviews man, I will be going thru them and try different terere’s in the coming weeks.
Regards Niels
Hey Niels,
Thank you for the kind words!
Terere is great! But if you’re looking for something strong with a good caffeine kick, it’s not the best since it’s brewed cold. It takes longer for it to extract all the caffeine and other compounds. I’d definitely give traditional mate a try if you haven’t already.
Cheers!
Darren
