In all my years of drinking mate, I don’t think I’ve ever met a brand as mild, smooth, and silky as this one right here – Jesper.
It’s not as popular as brands like Cruz De Malta or Rosamonte and I can see why…
It lacks the robustness, strength, and kick that these more well-known brands have. But this isn’t to say Jesper is a bad mate because it’s on the milder side. In fact, it might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Why don’t we find out right now?
Below, I’m going to walk you through this mate’s nose, taste, finish, body/texture, and more, so you can decide whether this mate is the perfect one for you.
Let’s begin.
Nose
Opening up its lovely brown paper packaging, Jesper releases a bright aroma of citrus, oats, and fresh bread. Nothing unusual here. It smells similar to most mates, except this contains no trace of smokiness.
Taste
(Gourd Available Here and Bombilla Here)
On the forefront, Jesper produces hints of tobacco, cedar and peanuts which wonderfully coalesce with one another, and tastes very similar to Rosamonte except without the smokiness. I also find a touch of honey underneath it all which adds a nice balancing sweetness. As I continue drinking this mate, the peanut note gradually disappears as the sweetness strengthens and a new grassy note comes to the scene. I’m sure fans of Playadito and Liebig will find Jesper very welcoming. It’s a great beginner mate.
I found it to do best in temperatures of around 160ºF (71ºC) as it strengthens its already light taste. Any lower, and I don’t really taste much.
Finish
Jesper has a light finish with a subtle, fleeting nuttiness. Once disappeared, a bitterness sits on my palate that doesn’t really go away. Luckily, it’s not the type of bitterness that’ll make me wince. It’s present, but not disturbing.
Body/Texture
Jesper is without a doubt a light-bodied mate. It’s almost like drinking water. Soft and smooth, it gently flows in and out with ease. However, a bit of astringency can be felt after swallowing. It makes the inside of my cheeks sticky in a way.
Cut
Jesper features a classic Argentine cut. You can find large dark and light green leaves mixed in with more finely-ground ones. Dust content is fairly low. And there are lots and lots of white palos, which I believe is what’s responsible for this mate’s mildly sweet taste.
When preparing, pay careful attention to the mountain of mate as it won’t hold up well because of the low amounts of dust. However, when it comes to filtration, you don’t need to worry. The large particles won’t seep through.
Cycle
Jesper contains a short-to-medium cycle. It lasts long but its strength doesn’t. After about 5 refills, its flavor takes a nosedive and you can noticeably taste it. But once it does, it keeps on pushing although its flavor is weaker. I can finish around 3/4 of a liter before it becomes completely washed.
Effect
Like its taste, Jesper is also light in effect which is good news for you guys who are sensitive to caffeine.
I almost never get jittery with this mate, despite drinking it on an empty stomach. When drinking, you can expect the typical gradual increase in focus, but also an uplifting mood. Whenever I pour myself a gourd of this mate, I feel better overall.
Jesper is a great all-day mate for relaxing leisurely activities like reading, writing, and lounging around. To me, it seems pretty low in caffeine so you don’t have to worry about it being too stimulating. But like they say, your mileage may vary.
Jesper Yerba Mate Review
Anyone looking for a milder, sweeter mate can’t go wrong with Jesper.
As long as you enjoy the taste of mate, I can’t see how anyone could say this tastes bad.
It’s one of the most reliable mates I’ve had.
If I don’t know what to drink on a certain morning, I can always count on Jesper. It’s flavorful, soothing, smooth, and gets me going.
