Mate Factor is an American brand I didn’t think I’d ever review on this blog, but today’s the day.
Compared to all the traditional brands from South America which started in the early 1900s, Mate Factor is what I’d consider a new age yerba mate brand (founded in 1998).
It’s the modern yerba for the modern matero.
And it’s evident in the way they harvest, package, and market their mate. For more information as to why I’m not partial to these kinds of brands, click here.
But I digress…
Now onto the good stuff.
I have a 12oz bag of Mate Factor to review that I’ve been drinking daily. Below, you’re going to discover what it smells, tastes, and looks like (plus more) so you can determine whether this is the perfect mate for you.
Ready?
Nose
Mate Factor arrives in a vacuum-sealed aluminum packaging stored within their branded bag. After cutting the vacuum-sealed bag open, I smell what seems awfully familiar – fresh grassy notes reminiscent of brands like Ximango and Madrugada. And it’s no coincidence… Not only does Mate Factor come from Brazil, but it also isn’t aged or smoked like chimarrão. Sniffing a bit harder, subtle hints of dark chocolate and a sweetness can be detected.
Taste
When it comes to taste, it’s very similar to how it smells.
A rich grassy flavor dominates the palate, and again, tastes just like the chimarrão brands I’ve tried. Notes of dark chocolate are also hiding in the background along with a nice gentle sweetness. There’s nothing complex about this mate. What you experience on your first sip, you’ll experience on your last sip. And as expected, there’s no hint of smokiness. Unusually though, there’s this unique sour tanginess that stays on the tip of my tongue, which reminds me of the plum note in the brand Mbaeteko.
I found Mate Factor to do best in water temperatures of around 150ºF (66ºC)
Finish
Right after swallowing, this mate leaves a nice clean finish behind. Typically with other mates, you can experience some bitterness, but not with Mate Factor. The finish carries over its grassiness and disappears within 30 seconds, keeping your palate renewed and refreshed.
Body/Texture
Mate Factor is a medium-to-full bodied mate. The second you take a sip, you can feel its presence take over. Super creamy and velvety, there’s nothing astringent, harsh, or off-putting about this mate. It’s soft, smooth, and overall, very easygoing.
Cut
Mate Factor is sourced from Brazil, and features a uniform cut similar to brands from Uruguay with its finely-chopped leaves. Stems are white, thin and short. Dust content is also fairly low. Remember, this mate isn’t smoked or aged, and it’s evident in its semi-vibrant olive green color.
Although the particles are small, preparation is very easy as long as you have a good spoon bombilla (get one from our store). Maintaining the mountain of mate is also effortless with Mate Factor as the leaves and stems cake together.
Cycle
Mate Factor offers a medium-to-long cycle. Its strength holds up nicely from beginning to end. It isn’t until about 1/2 a liter does the flavor start to take a noticeable change. With a medium-sized gourd like the one pictured in this post, I can drink at least 3/4 of a liter before it’s completely washed of flavor.
Effect
Mate Factor strikes a great balance between energizing and relaxing.
Whenever I drink this mate, I feel the effects of heightened focus slowly creep up on me, but it never gets out of control. Slow and steady is what this brand is all about. I also experience a sense of calmness take over me as this mate warms up my entire body. Its rich grassy taste is very comforting as well. Personally, Mate Factor works to be a great stress reliever.
It’s good in the morning and afternoon, but not for the evening as it can be too stimulating.
Mate Factor Yerba Mate Review
Before trying Mate Factor, I was skeptical.
But now after drinking gourds of it, I must say, it’s a fine-tasting mate.
If you ever wanted to try chimarrão but don’t want to risk messing up the preparation, then Mate Factor is a godsend for you. It features similar characteristics in taste, smell, and body, but is as easy to prepare as Argentinian brands.
On the bag, it says The Healthy Energizer and I couldn’t agree more with this statement.

Thank you Darren. Does Mate Factor’s unsmoked leaves mean that it was dry aged? And should contain less PAHs? Thanks!
