Welcome to Mate Monday – a weekly series where every Monday, I share with you a quick tip to enhance your overall yerba mate drinking experience and knowledge. If you have a tip of your own, submit it here and you may be featured on our next post!
Now let’s begin…
Today’s Mate Monday is about preventing stomach issues.
I learned this tip from one of my email subscribers (sign up here!), and boy has it made a big difference.
You see, a little while ago, I sent out an email detailing the negative side effects of yerba mate. We always hear about the good in yerba, but there are downsides to it as well. And one of the downsides I listed was stomach issues. More specifically stomach pain, discomfort, and diarrhea.
Now these side effects may just be a natural reaction for those who don’t respond well to yerba mate.
But then I was told this from my fellow subscriber…
He also suffered from stomach problems like I did. So he asked an Argentinian friend what might be going on and he said that’s what happens when you switch between brands a lot. He said the leaves contain bacteria and our body needs time to adapt to it. So if one day you drink something like Cruz De Malta, then the next day you pick up Canarias, you can expect some rumbling in your tummy.
And believe it or not, that’s exactly what I was doing the past week when he told me that.
I had all these new yerba mate brands I ordered for reviews. And call me crazy, but I couldn’t help but try them all as soon as possible. One day it would be this, the next day it would be that, and so on and so forth.
Now although I can verify all the science behind what his friend said, I can tell you this… Once I stopped trying so many brands at once, almost all my stomach issues disappeared.
It was pretty magical and saved me several bad trips to the bathroom.
So if you’ve been experience some stomach problems after drinking yerba mate, try finishing one brand before moving onto the next. Or at least don’t switch brands too often.
Hope this helped you materos out.
See you next week on Mate Monday!

Very helpful thanks! I was excited to drink yerba mate the traditional way but got disappointed when I noticed stomach discomfort. I’ve been switching between Guayaki and Canaris depending on which one I felt like drinking so it looks like I’ll have to choose one or the other.
