I always wanted a boost. But I never liked energy drinks.

I always saw people chugging Redbulls and Monsters growing up, thinking they were the coolest drinks consumed by the coolest people. You know, the high energy types, the go-getters, the ones who stay up late, and the ones who party all night long.

But as time went on, I realized they’re actually not that great.

Not just in regards to energy, but to health as well.

They’re packed with sugar and have a high tendency to make you crash.

But three years ago, I found yerba mate – a tea originating in South America with a stimulating effect, unlike any other drink on the market.

Since then, I’ve been drinking it the traditional way – with a gourd and filtered straw – and it’s been life-changing. So much so that I never bothered to drink it any other way.

Until now.

I finally gave in and went to my local supermarket to buy arguably the most popular yerba mate energy drinks made by none other than Guayaki.

And surprisingly, they’re pretty good…

Guayaki Yerba Mate Energy Drinks

Guayaki offers many options when it comes to yerba mate.

But today, we’re only going to cover their canned drinks. Solely, the cans that are non-carbonated/sparkling (that will be a post for another time).

These cans come in 5 different flavors:

• Lemon Elation
• Revel Berry
• Enlighten Mint
• Orange Exuberance
• and Bluephoria

I bought two of each flavor and drank them all within 1-2 weeks.

Here’s how each one tastes…

Lemon Elation Review

Lemon Elation is Guayaki’s lemon, ginger, and elderflower flavor. Not too sure what elderflower is but I’m pretty sure I can’t taste it anyway. This flavor is all lemon with barely a trace of ginger. But it tastes great. It has a nice touch of sourness from the lemon, and on the finish, a hint of earthiness from the yerba. Lemon Elation was the first flavor I tried and it tastes like most lemon iced teas. So if you like that, you’re sure to fall in love with this one.

Revel Berry Review

Revel Berry is Guayaki’s raspberry and blackberry flavor. If you’re into berry flavors like me, this is quite the treat. I mostly taste raspberry. Very sweet and tart. This flavor reminds me of something in-between raspberry iced tea and cranberry juice. My only complaint with this flavor is the taste of actual yerba mate is non-existent. If its earthiness was stronger, I think it would’ve made this flavor much more balanced, and not so sweet. Other than that, taste alone, it’s good.

Enlighten Mint Review

Enlighten Mint is Guayaki’s peppermint and honey flavor, and they nailed it with this one. The yerba mate taste is more pronounced compared to the other flavors and the mint is subtle yet refreshing, though the honey remains elusive. It’s probably the closest flavor to traditional mate/tereré (cold-brewed mate). It reminds me of Kurupi Menta Y Boldo with added sugar. Enlighten Mint also isn’t too sweet, which sits much better on my palate. All in all, I have no complaints about this flavor. Even as someone who isn’t much of a fan of mint, I love this one.

Orange Exuberance Review

Orange Exuberance is Guayaki’s orange, tangerine, and lime flavor. They struck a perfect balance of every flavor in this can. It has a natural orange/tangerine taste with a very slight sourness from the lime. I was expecting this one to taste artificial, but it’s actually smooth and delicious, and not too sweet. The flavor reminds me of juice boxes made by Hi-C and Capri Sun. Overall, I like it, but it’s not my favorite.

Bluephoria Review

Bluephoria is Guayaki’s blueberry and elderberry flavor, and I can really taste the blueberry in this one. Again, it doesn’t have an artificial-like taste. Everything tastes sweet, smooth, and all-natural. It’s tangy and tart, but with little to no taste of actual yerba mate. I couldn’t taste it even if I tried my hardest to focus on it. But nonetheless, taste alone, Bluephoria is yet another delicious flavor.

What’s The Best Guayaki Yerba Mate Flavor? (RANKED)

With several options to choose from, you’re probably wondering which tastes the best.

Here’s how I would rank them, starting from worst to best.

• Revel Berry
• Bluephoria
• Orange Exuberance
• Lemon Elation
• Enlighten Mint

Enlighten Mint is the best Guayaki flavor in my opinion.

Initially, I thought something as simple as mint wouldn’t taste too great, but not only does this have the most unique flavor, it’s also the tastiest. It’s the closest flavor to traditional mate too, and that’s what I’m looking for.

All the other flavors (maybe with the exception of Lemon Elation) is no different than drinking fruit juice.

But if that’s what you like, then the other flavors might be best for you.

Is Guayaki Yerba Mate Healthy?

Compared to other popular energy drinks such as RedBull and Monster, I’d say Guayaki is a much better alternative.

The main reason being, its caffeine content is naturally sourced from the leaves of yerba mate, rather than it being used as an additive. Guayaki also contains only 13 grams of sugar per serving, whereas RedBull and Monster both contain 27 grams of sugar per serving.

Guayaki uses organic, fair trade, non-GMO ingredients as well. Nothing in the ingredient list looks strange or unfamiliar either. The ingredients are essentially brewed yerba mate, yerba mate extract, cane sugar, and different types of juices and juice concentrates.

The only issue I experienced with Guayaki is bloating.

I’m not sure exactly what’s causing it, but it’s definitely not the yerba mate as I’ve been drinking it every day for years. If I had to guess, I’d assume it’s the juice concentrates that keep upsetting my stomach. So if you plan on trying Guayaki, keep this in mind.

What Is Guayaki Yerba Mate Good For?

Guayaki’s canned drinks are categorized as energy drinks, and can easily be used for the same purpose.

Whether it be for staying up late, studying, working out, or anything that requires an extra boost, these cans are sure to give you a nice kick.

There’s one thing that separates yerba mate energy drinks from your typical ones though.

And that’s the two compounds naturally found in yerba mate – theobromine and theophylline.

In short, these chemical compounds are responsible for the euphoric and relaxing feeling yerba mate is known to have, in addition to its mental stimulation. Which is why you’ll usually hear that yerba mate provides clean energy. Because when you drink yerba mate, not only will you feel more focused because of the caffeine, but you also won’t experience intense jitters or a hard crash like you normally would with coffee.

Yerba Mate Energy Drink Review

I like yerba mate energy drinks. So much that I’m almost afraid to admit it. In fact, when I ordered 10 cans of Guayaki (2 of each flavor) for the sake of this review, I couldn’t stop drinking them.

I had a can each day until I ran out.

They’re sweet, delicious, and convenient.

Every morning, I’d wake up, and grab a can from my fridge and instantly get energized.

As great (and addicting) as they are though, it still doesn’t compare to drinking mate out of a gourd.

The stimulation and taste are night and day. The only thing yerba mate cans have over the traditional method is convenience and portability. With these, I don’t have to heat water or prepare my gourd. And if I want one on the go, I can easily bring a single can with me or pack it in my bag.

Overall, yerba mate energy drinks are delicious, but a not-so-great option if you want to get the full yerba mate experience.
