I love drinking yerba mate the traditional way, but lately, I’ve been addicted to yerba mate lattes and I’m not afraid to admit it.
These things are crazy delicious.
I even got my girlfriend hooked on it to the point she can’t stop begging me to make her one.
If you want to know how to make this drink, follow this simple yerba mate latte recipe below and you’ll never drink yerba mate the same again.
Ingredients For Yerba Mate Latte
Before we get started, you’ll need a few things:
- Any type of strainer (teapot, tea strainer, french press, coffee maker)
- Milk
- Looseleaf yerba of your choice
- Optional – Sugar/honey/sweetener
For convenience, I’d recommend getting this french press on Amazon. It even comes with a nice portable milk frother which is perfect for lattes. But for today, I’ll be using this ordinary tea strainer since it’s easier to clean up.
For milk, I’ll be using regular whole milk. You can use whatever milk you prefer. I also like to use almond milk.
As for yerba, I’ll be using the rest of my bag of Titrayju from my last review.
Now that you have everything together, here are the steps on how to make a yerba mate latte.
Yerba Mate Latte Recipe
After experimenting with different ratios and measurements, I think I found the perfect mate latte recipe that’ll blow your tastebuds away.
Here’s the recipe…
Step 1:
Fill your french press/strainer with 1.5 tablespoons of yerba mate and wet it with some room temperature water to prevent it from being scorched.
Step 2:
Heat water until 170ºF (77ºC) and pour in 6 ounces of water.
Step 3:
Steep for about 5 minutes or until the tea is a dark green/yellow hue.
Step 4:
Fill the cup with 4 tablespoons of heated milk.
Step 5:
Add your sweetener of choice. I use one packet of artificial sweetener.
Step 6:
Now stir and serve!
Try this recipe out and see how you like it. If it doesn’t do it for you, adjust the measurements to your liking. But this is what I found to taste the absolute best. It has enough earthiness from the yerba to keep its original taste, and just enough milk and sweetener to spice up the flavor.
Yerba Mate Latte VS Coffee Latte
Chances are, some of you ended up here because you love regular lattes but wanted to try it with yerba mate instead of coffee.
If you’re wondering how the two compare, the taste is night and day.
Lattes are richer, darker, and creamier. While yerba mate lattes are earthier and more vegetal.
If there’s anything I can compare a mate latte to it would be milk tea which is a concoction made of black tea, milk, and sweetener. It’s the same tea used for classic bubble tea (boba), which I love, so having this is always a treat.

4 tablespoons are 1/4 cup (which is a little easier than measuring out four tablespoons). Also, for a more convincing latte, steam and froth the milk. This can be done by using a steamer if you have one oooorrr just pour hot milk into a closed, heat-safe container and then shake it like a polaroid picture.
Tasty vegan variation: replace milk with Thai coconut milk (form the can- full fat if you want it extra yummy)
