In today’s review, we’ll be covering the traditional Argentinian Rosamonte Yerba Mate.
It’s the brand best-selling author, Tim Ferriss, drinks. He says it’s one of the things that has helped him write some of his giant 400-600 page books.
After hearing that, I had to buy it myself.
Rosamonte is a popular brand both in Argentina and in the United States.
If you’re wondering how it tastes or whether it’s worth getting, then you don’t want to miss another word of this Rosamonte Yerba Mate Review.
I’ve been drinking it daily for the past few weeks.
And here’s what I got… (watch our video below or scroll down to read more!)
Nose
When you open up a bag of Rosamonte, you’re instantly hit with a sharp and sour lemon note. Almost like a sour hard candy, but it’s interrupted by a rich earthiness. Typical of most mates. When brewing in the gourd, its lemony aroma is still there, but is now accompanied with hints of raw cashews. It’s pleasant and light.
Taste
Compared to the smell of Rosamonte, its taste is quite similar. From the moment you take a sip, Rosamonte attacks your palate with its sharp citrusy notes again. The astringency is enough to make beginner’s grimace.
But other than that, more easygoing notes of earth, woods, florals and an underlying nuttiness balance out this yerba. A light smokiness is there but fleeting. No changes in flavor throughout drinking. Although many people have warned of Rosamonte to be a harsh drink, I think that’s only true for new materos. But for more experienced drinkers, it should actually be sweet and smooth.
I found Rosamonte to do best in temperatures of around 150ºF (66ºC). Any higher, and the smokiness is taken up a notch. Lower temps allow this mate to bloom into all its flavors equally.
Finish
As far as finish goes, Rosamonte is interesting. Only a slight hint of its sourness and earthiness is left behind which disappears after a few seconds. However, a new note of heavy cream then pops up and takes the stage, lasting for at least a minute.
Body/Texture
Rosamonte is a light-to-medium-bodied mate. Although it feels weightless and watery for the majority of the time, it also goes in and instantly coats your mouth with a silky-smooth creamy texture. Very easy on the palate, Rosamonte is soothing and relaxing to drink. You can expect a little astringency, however, after every sip.
Cycle
For a yerba mate that packs a powerful punch in regards to taste, it unfortunately doesn’t last long. Rosamonte has a short-cycle. Its strength plunges within 1/4 of a liter, and completely washes away after a little more than 1/2 a liter.
Cut
Rosamonte features a classic Argentine blend and has very large leaves compared to most brands. Its light and dark green leaves are broadly cut, with some being a dark brown/black color from the smoking process. Palos are also thick and can be as long as one centimeter. Dust content is average.
When preparing, be careful with the mountain of mate. It doesn’t stick together. The leaves are too big and can easily slide around. Another thing to keep in mind is to fill your gourd with a little less yerba than usual because when the leaves soak in water, it grows and can crowd your gourd, leaving very little room for water.
Other than that, you should never have a problem drinking Rosamonte. Its large leaves and palos make filtration easy.
Effect
Rosamonte has some very powerful effects. All yerba mates do, but you can tell the difference in this one. Despite the mate not lasting long, the effects sure do. The moment you take that sip from your bombilla, you’ll experience it almost instantly.
I typically experience increased energy and focus. I start to be more in tune and in the moment. But at the same time, I also feel more relaxed, especially my body. Tight muscles are loosened and overall, I feel lighter on my feet. And in return, this helps me focus even better.
Now although this mate is relaxing, I wouldn’t drink it for the sole purpose of relaxing. It would be hard to do anyway as its flavors doesn’t last long. Instead, I like using Rosamonte for being more productive. It always kicks me into high gear.
I recommend Rosamonte as a morning or afternoon mate. It can be disruptive if consumed in the evening.
Rosamonte Yerba Mate Review
Rosamonte is a classic.
With its bold and strong flavors, you’d expect it to be long-lasting. But no. Rosamonte likes to keep it short and sweet, and I have no problem with that when it makes up for it in taste and effect.
After trying this brand, I can see why it’s so popular.
For those who love a mate that bursts with flavor, you won’t be disappointed with this one.
However, it does lack complexity. Its taste is linear and unwavering. So if you enjoy the first sip, you’ll enjoy the rest. If you don’t, you might want to look elsewhere.

I tried this as a beginner and although the first sip was bad, it got better and better and i actually love its unique earthiness. My bombilla is also terrible so i had to cover it with a tea bag to stop the big particles coming through (pratially my fault for not making it perfectly for the 1st time. Will be hoping to enjoy again, might even buy playdito or cruz de malta as i heard they are more sweet and enjoyablr
This is the first brand I try and holy what did I miss out on! Yerba mate is anything like filter coffee or green tea (I hate sweet drinks so I always drink them pure). I brewed at green tea temp so 65°C and I didn’t find any bitternes at all, an hint of smoke but the most prominent notes were herbs and lemon zest (which is one of my favorite thing, I put lemon zest everywhere).
I’m very, very sensitive to caffeine as I used to drink up to 40/60g of coffee everyday, but after COVID I only drink single origin coffee and if I drink anything that has robusta in I feel the jitters…but yerba is like dark magic, seriously.
Coffee is a short boost of energy with a long crash
Green tea is a medium boost and a crash
Yerba is a long boost and a short crash
I hope this comment can help, much love from Italy
I’ve been a playadito guy for most of this, but sometimes I just need a little bit more. Rosamonte keeps a lot of the flavor profile I like, but with a more stimulating kick. Definitely a keeper.
