Welcome to Mate Monday – a weekly series where every Monday, I share with you a quick tip to enhance your overall yerba mate drinking experience and knowledge. If you have a tip of your own, submit it here and you may be featured on our next post!
Now let’s begin…
Today’s Mate Monday is about newcomers who hate their first sip of mate.
We’ve all been there before.
You hear about yerba mate and how great it is, order some, prepare it, take your first sip, and cringe at the intense bitterness that just hit your tongue. It’s unlike anything you’ve tasted before, and now you’re confused why anyone in their right mind would drink this.
I get it.
I thought the same.
But what you need to understand is yerba mate is an acquired taste. Most people aren’t going to like it the first time around. Like coffee, wine, whiskey, cigars, etc. yerba mate also needs some getting used to. Your taste-buds need to get accustomed to its strength and bitterness.
So when you have your first sip and hate it, don’t stop and give up or you might miss out on all of its benefits.
Instead, keep at it. If it’s too much, drink a bit of water after each sip to wash out the bitterness. But don’t stop drinking it every day because each day after that just gets easier and easier.
Eventually, you’ll find yourself starting to like the strong earthiness of this tea and that’s when the magic starts to happen.
What you once hated just a week or two ago, you now love.
It’ll take some persistence, but it’s worth it in the end.
Trust me.
Hope this helped!
See you next week on Mate Monday!
