Liebig Original Yerba Mate Review (Is It Good?)

Are you tired of those harsh, smoky, in-your-face yerba mates?

If so, then Liebig Original is something you have to try.

Whether you’re a beginner or long-time drinker, this brand is sure to satisfy all your taste-buds.

yerba

Liebig is actually created by the same company that created Playadito. So if you loved their other magnificent creation, Liebig is bound to give you some lovely flashbacks.

In today’s review, you’re going to discover what it tastes like, how it smells, looks, and more.

So without wasting another second, let’s get into it…

Nose

Straight out of its eye-catching gold package, Liebig releases a rich bouquet of sweet notes consisting of cereal (Frosted Flakes), vanilla, and honey. Dig deeper and you’ll smell rare hints of cherries. There’s nothing bitter or earthy with this mate. Only sweet.

Very pleasant to the nose, I couldn’t stop sniffing the bag. It’s rare to find brands with a compilation of notes like Liebig. The only other brand I’ve tried that’s similar is Union Suave.

Taste

Liebig does a nice job carrying over its aroma to its taste. From the moment you take your first sip, Liebig showcases an array of flavors. Starting with a predominant grass and toast note coupled with a light fruitiness (figs), it then begins to elegantly drop soft hints of honey, florals, and citrus for your enjoyment. Altogether, what you have is a brew almost similar to the taste of sweetened lemon iced tea.

So sweet and graceful, if you didn’t know what you were drinking, you would think someone sprinkled a little sugar in your mate. But no. That’s just the magic of this yerba mate brand. Absolutely no smoky or harsh notes are found in this mate either, making it nothing but pleasant to sip.

I found Liebig to do best at low water temperatures of around 135-150ºF (57-66ºC)

Finish

On the finish, Liebig keeps up its sour citrus undertone. Like a squeeze of lemon or lime juice. Very refreshing and balances out the other sweeter flavors. Surprisingly after a few seconds, this sourness then turns bitter, like you’re now nibbling on the lemon or lime’s skin. The finish lasts for around 30 seconds.

Body/Texture

Liebig is a light-bodied mate. So light, it’s like drinking water. It doesn’t matter how short or how long you steep the mate, it’s always going to come up light and wispy. But once you swallow the mate, you get to enjoy this light creamy texture that coats your entire mouth and tongue. Making Liebig great for those unfamiliar with the heaviness a mate can bring.

Cut

yerba

Liebig features a classic Argentinian cut. In this bag, dust and powder is kept to a minimum. This yerba is composed mostly of broadly-cut leaves sprinkled with thick white stems. Overall, a nice olive green color and beginner-friendly blend of yerba. With little amounts of dust and plenty of large leaves, preparation couldn’t be any easier.

Cycle

Liebig Original contains a medium cycle. With the gourd pictured in this review, I can finish up to 3/4 to 1 full liter. Although the flavor is light, it lasts a long time before it’s all gone. The flavor also doesn’t take an instant drop. Liebig keeps its strength for a majority of the time I spend drinking it. Even when you think it’s about to finish, it somehow pulls through anyway.

Effect

Like its body and strength, you can expect Liebig to produce only slight effects.

Nothing close to the power a strong mate like Taragui can give you, Liebig is better suited for those sensitive to caffeine or for those who don’t want to be too stimulated.

Sipping Liebig, I don’t experience any sudden bursts of energy. Quite the opposite. Instead, I become much calmer, relaxed, and focused. And this all happens subtly. It’s not until around my fifth gourd do I realize how focused I am.

Liebig is a great mate for any time of the day. With a weak caffeine hit, you won’t have to worry about drinking this during the night and having it keep you up. I enjoy this mate best when I’m just relaxing or doing effortless tasks.

Liebig Original Yerba Mate Review

liebig

Liebig is the perfect yerba mate to grab when you want to take a break from the more bold and powerful brands.

Even though this mate is light and mild, don’t take this to mean it’s not tasty.

Liebig is still very flavorful with a variety of sweet and grassy notes. It just isn’t powerful. Rather, gentle. And I found this to make it even more enjoyable to drink.

Instead of scrunching up my face because of how bitter a mate is, I can sip this one with a relaxed smile.

And that’s just what it does every time I prepare myself a gourd of this – I smile.

  1. Greetings from Argentina!

Liebig is currently my go to choice. Other than that I might go for La Merced (de monte).

Great reviews by the way 🙂

Liebig is delicious! I love how it is sweet like honey, toast, and Graham crackers. I drink liebig hot, and today I made it as tereré in a French tea press and it tasted good ice cold. yemaype is made by liebig/playadito.
