Pipore Yerba Mate Review (How Does It Taste?)

Are you wondering what Pipore tastes like?

Well, I’ve been drinking it daily for the past 2 weeks, testing it out in different gourds, water temperatures, and recording my findings.

And in this Pipore Yerba Mate Review, you’re going to discover everything about this brand in regards to how it tastes, smells, looks, and more.

pipore

If you want to get a hint of what’s to come, let’s just say Pipore is an interesting one.

Why?

Let’s find out…

Nose

Right out of the bag, Pipore contains this rich fruity smell combined with hints of roasted peanuts. Some bread notes and a noticeable smokiness comes out of the packaging as well. Nothing bright or sharp with this one. Rather, dark and strong. However, when brewing in the gourd, the aroma becomes grassy and fig-like which you’ll see carry over into its taste.

Taste

From the start, you’ll notice Pipore’s classic earthy and grassy notes quickly transition into a salty taste – almost like drinking sea water. But after a few more refills, this mate starts taking on characteristics of a delectable butter toffee candy with almonds.

pipore

A strange bitterness hides in the background of it all which tips the mate out of place. I don’t know what it is, but it lingers in the background of every sip and makes the flavor, for lack of a better term, awkward. And by that, I mean it doesn’t mix well with the rest of its taste. By the second half of the mate though, it disappears and starts showing off hints of figs which pulls it back together. Very tasty.

To bring out the sweeter notes of this mate, I found Pipore to do best in low water temperatures of around 140-150ºF (60-66ºC). Any higher and the bitterness takes over.

Finish

On the finish, Pipore continues to boast its fruity flavor but now with a subtle grassy note and a slight nuttiness. The aftertaste is light and soft and disappears within 30 seconds. No astringency is found here.

Body/Texture

Pipore is a light-bodied mate. Mild yet flavorful, this mate sits gently on the palate. The texture is buttery smooth and flows with ease. In the beginning, it can be a bit creamy. However, that doesn’t last for long. It quickly becomes watery.

Cycle

Pipore contains a short-to-medium cycle. At the start, each sip is packed with flavor. But once you give it 2-3 refills, it starts losing its strength. And from here on to the end, it levels out and stays the same.

Cut

pipore

Pipore features a classic Argentine cut. Leaves are mostly broad-cut with some smaller leaves here and there. Stems of a variety of different sizes and lengths are sprinkled in. Not too many in palos in this mate, but there’s an ample amount of dust which coats the yerba, making preparation is easy as the mountain of mate stays in place. Overall, this mate holds a beautiful dark green color.

Effect

Like the body of this mate, Pipore is also light in effect.

Whenever I drink it, I don’t experience anything that pops out to me. This mate is simple and straightforward. Expect to feel more relaxed, calm, and focused, but nothing extremely energetic.

The effects are felt more around your face instead of in your body. Mates with more caffeine can typically be felt all around. But not with Pipore, which is why I like to enjoy it when I’m unwinding or reading a book. It’s a nice mate to enjoy over good conversations as well.

When it comes to Pipore, there are some days when the taste just doesn’t do it for me, but then there are also days when I absolutely love it and can’t stop refilling my gourd.

On these good days, I can’t think of any other mate that tastes as good.

But even after drinking at least 15 gourds of this mate, I’m still back and forth about it.

Would I buy it again?

I would. But not anytime soon. Pipore doesn’t have me hooked.

        Hey Darren,

I have just started drinking yerba mate but i only want unsmoked because it’s healthier. Can you tell me if this red Pipore is smoked or unsmoked. Where I live I can only get red Pipore and Nobleza Gaucha.

        1. Hi Denis,

Thanks for the comment. Based on what I’ve read, it appears to be air-dried, not smoked.

          Cheers,
          Darren

          1. Hi Darren thanks for the great work. I couldn’t find any information on whether pipore was unsmoked. Are you confident that pipore is air dried? If so would that eliminate the main health risks? What about Amanda?Cruz de Malta? Taragui? Thanks so much!

  2. It’s unsmoked, and has a very very nice texture while you drink.
Saddly caffeine hit its not so pronounced but overall a great mate tasting very good and way better than many other brands

  3. I’m Lebanese, and my family is Druze. In our village, Hasbaya, all Druze people are super fond of matte. We drink it like water, both socially and individually.
I now live in Australia, and take pride in introducing my friends to matte. This is the brand my mother, grandmother, and gran-gran SWEAR by. I never bother with any other.

This is a multi-generation review haha
    Cheers folks.
