Description
Imperial mate gourds are some of the most sought-after pieces in the yerba mate world. And our CIELO Imperials are all carefully handcrafted and imported directly from Argentina. These works of art feature designs on both the ferrule (metal strap) and virola (metal rim), while a smooth black-stained leather encases the calabash. Capacity is small-to-medium.
It’s recommended you cure your gourd before use. (The size and shape of each gourd varies from the pictures shown as no two gourds are the same – some are larger, some are smaller. The design of the rim may also vary, but will all contain two bronze appliques)

Care / Maintenance
Mate Gourds
Before your first use, it's best to cure your mate gourd to remove debris and reduce bitter tannins.
- Fill with hot water (170°F / 77 °C) and steep for 20 minutes.
- Pat dry with a paper towel.
- Rest gourd on its side in a well-ventilated spot (a fan works best).
Bombillas
New bombillas should be cleaned to remove potential manufacturing residue.
- Boil in water with 1 tbsp baking soda for 10–15 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly and let it dry.
Yerba Mate
Keep yerba mate in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. For green yerba, store in the fridge/freezer to preserve freshness and prevent degradation
