"GAUCHO" Brazilian Cuia + Leather Base
Free US Shipping For Orders $60+
Description
Handmade in Brazil, these gourds show you what "beauty in simplicity" really means - a simple calabash with a stainless steel rim, comfortably sat on top of a hand-sewn leather base. This takes a step back from being loud and extravagant. Instead, it gives you a reminder of where it all started. And in that, is where the spirit and culture of drinking mate lies... Medium-to-large capacity.
It’s recommended you cure your gourd before use, though these only need a rinse since the interior is thoroughly cleared out. (The size and shape varies from the pictures shown as no two gourds are the same and are all handmade – some are larger, some are smaller. Minor blemishes may appear)
Dimensions with base (approx.): 4 x 4.5 in.
Care / Maintenance
Mate Gourds
Before your first use, it's best to cure your mate gourd to remove debris and reduce bitter tannins.
- Fill with hot water (170°F / 77 °C) and steep for 20 minutes.
- Pat dry with a paper towel.
- Rest gourd on its side in a well-ventilated spot (a fan works best).
Bombillas
New bombillas should be cleaned to remove potential manufacturing residue.
- Boil in water with 1 tbsp baking soda for 10–15 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly and let it dry.
Yerba Mate
Keep yerba mate in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. For green yerba, store in the fridge/freezer to preserve freshness and prevent degradation
