When people ask about the taste of yerba mate, the answer is usually something like,
It’s super bitter!
But today I got a brand that barely lives up to that description.
Roapipo is an Argentine mate with – surprisingly – not much to say about it. If you like simple and boring in the best way possible, this will get the job done well.
In today’s review, we’re going to dive deep into how Roapipo tastes, smells, looks, feels, and more, so you can determine whether this simple mate can change your life.
Nose
To the nose, Roapipo is nothing new. It’s your typical bouquet of dry hay and grass – expected from an organic brand. Nothing smoky is present. Just the natural aroma of fresh yerba mate with a bright sawdust note.
Taste
As I mentioned, Roapipo is boring. There’s nothing too crazy or cool about this brand. It doesn’t have that wow factor. But it does have an addicting taste I think anyone can appreciate.
Upon my first sip, I quickly get hit with typical notes of fresh grass, soil, and hay. A few more sips in and then I start tasting a light hint of cinnamon which helps balance out the mate. Especially when coupled with its toasty malt undertones along with a touch of figgy sweetness. No harshness or smokiness is present in this brand, but there is a slight astringency. If you enjoy other brands such as Playadito, Kraus, Jesper, or La Obereña, this will be another one to add to the list.
Now hearing all this you might think how is Roapipo boring when it’s packed with so many notes? What’s boring is not only does the flavor profile stay the same from start to finish, but it also lacks strength. It doesn’t have that punch. Pizazz. Oomph. But for me, I’m OK with that. It’s why it’s so addicting. It provides just the right amount of flavor and delivers it gently.
I found this mate to do best in lower temperatures of around 140ºF (60ºC).
Finish
Like its taste, Roapipo also doesn’t give much on the finish. In the beginning, all that’s left behind is some astringency. As I get to the middle, however, I can detect hints of bread and corn. But surprisingly, once the mate is almost completely washed out, the finish gives off this delicate note of apricots.
Body/Texture
Roapipo is a light-bodied mate. There’s not much texture going on here. For a majority of the time, it’s light and watery with just a bit of creaminess. The most that happens is at the start where it can be a little grainy. Afterward though, all that’s left is a dry-mouth sensation.
Cut
Roapipo is an Argentine mate with a Paraguayan-like cut. Leaves are all fine to medium-sized. While the palos are mostly white, long and thin with a few short, stumpy ones here and there. Overall, the yerba sports a nice grey-green color with some yellow and brown highlights. Dust content is also average – not too much, not too little.
What’s interesting about this yerba though is there’s a lot of seeds in it. If you look closely at the picture above, you can easily spot them. This is the most seeds I’ve ever seen in a brand before.
When it comes to preparation, there should be no issues. Any bombilla style will work.
Cycle
Although Roapipo is lacking in punch, it makes up for it with a long cycle. Somehow, this yerba is able to hold up through an entire liter of water. Its strength also remains consistent as it gradually starts to fade away. Definitely a pleasant surprise.
Effect
After tasting Roapipo, its effects are just what you’d expect – mild.
If you’re apprehensive to mates that are the hard-hitting, smack in your face types, Roapipo will ease your worries. This mate gently increases your focus – not directly upon the first sip, but across several refills. This is something I can really appreciate right now as my body seems to become more sensitive to caffeine. Roapipo takes you up on a smooth ride with better clarity and concentration, then slowly brings you back to Earth.
Definitely a mate I’d recommend if you want to stay on point for hours doing light tasks.
Roapipo Yerba Mate Review
Sometimes, simple is best. And this remains true for the plain jane that is Roapipo.
Although it might not dazzle your tastebuds, its consistent flavor is delicious enough to keep you constantly coming back.
I don’t remember the last time I’ve finished a bag of yerba so fast.
And that’s because of how reliable Roapipo is. I can drink it every day with no hesitation about whether I’ll feel good or bad, whether I’ll enjoy the taste that day or not, and whether it’ll keep me energized and productive.
If you want a brand that’ll always be by your side, Roapipo is the side-kick and partner-in-crime you’re looking for.
