Rosamonte Especial Review (How Does It Taste?)

If you’re wondering how Rosamonte Seleccion Especial tastes (or Rosamonte Especial for short), you’ve come to the right place.

But first – a little background.

My Experience With Rosamonte Yerba Mate

rosamonte

I’ve been drinking this yerba mate for at least three weeks now.

And safe to say, I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it.

Now, if you found this post, chances are, you’re also familiar with the original Rosamonte yerba mate (Review).

Whether you’ve tried that one before in the past, or are trying to figure out which one of the two you should get, you’ll find out by the end of this Rosamonte Especial Review.

I reviewed the original Rosamonte over two years ago at the time of writing this.

Now you might be wondering how come it took me so long to try their other yerba mate (the one I’m reviewing today).

And I’ll admit, I have no good reason. Other than I like to stick with original brands and stay away from different versions of it. But this is because of my false belief that they won’t taste much different from each other.

Boy was I wrong though…

Rosamonte Especial is almost a complete 180 from the original Rosamonte.

And here’s why…

Nose

From the moment I received my kilo bag of Rosamonte Especial, I couldn’t help but tear it open. Especially because of its unique shiny and glossy packaging.

It pokes out like a sore thumb amongst the rest of my bags of yerba mate.

But anyways, as I opened the bag, I took a big whiff.

Hints of sweetness, dried fruits, and slight woods fill the bag.

When prepared in my calabash gourd, however, you get a completely different sensation. Aromas of fresh baked bread, roasted sunflower seeds and light florals gently rise up from the brewed mate.

Very pleasant and inviting.

Now let’s take a sip…

Quick Note: as I’m writing this, I’m also drinking a nice gourd of this mate at around 160-170ºF.

Here’s what you’ll find.

Off the bat, you get a strong earthy and vegetal taste with a bit of smokiness and citrus notes. But this goes away rather quickly.

Around 2-4 refills, Rosamonte Especial takes on a new profile.

What was just soil-like, now becomes a little sweet with delicious floral notes. The bitterness starts to hide away as well as with any hints of smokiness.

Finish

This yerba mate has a mild finish. After swallowing, hints of salted nuts and sunflower seeds are left behind on your palate but disappears after 30 seconds.

Body/Texture

Rosamonte Especial contains a light-to-medium body. It has a weight to it that can be slightly chalky or pasty at times. Overall though, it’s smooth.

Cycle

How long does Rosamonte Especial last?

This brand of yerba lasts a long time.

Each gourd, I can finish about an entire liter before it’s completely washed out.

Compared to most mates, this is a good amount of time for you to keep sipping and experiencing its flavors. And this may be because of its Argentinian cut.

Cut

When you take a look inside the bag, you have a traditional cut of stems, leaves and dust.

The overall look gives it a dark green and tan color with white palos popping up here and there.

Very pretty and fluffy.

Rosamonte Especial boasts a very coarse cut. The leaves are extra wide and take up most of the mate. While long thick and thin stems are sprinkled in. There’s a good amount of dust as well.

Enough to leave a heavy imprint on your hand when you prepare it traditionally.

Luckily, thanks to its coarse cut, preparing is pretty easy. When drinking, I’ve never sucked up dust or small particles because of how thick the leaves are. They serve as a nice filter around your bombilla. Just be careful when making the mountain of mate as it can slide easily.

Effect

We’re all looking for a good kick when we’re drinking yerba mate. And Rosamonte Especial doesn’t disappoint when it comes to that.

After one or two refills, you’ll start feeling it right away.

Strong focus, concentration, elevated mood and a head high.

Great for being more productive, I drink this every morning when I need to write. It gives me clarity and creativity without being overbearing.

However, there are some times where I can get a bit jittery or anxious near the end, proving its strong effect and high caffeine level.

If you’re looking to get a head-start in the morning, Rosamonte Especial is the bag for you.

Rosamonte Especial Review

rosamonte

If you’re looking for a classic yerba mate you can count on, this is it.

Whether you tried the original Rosamonte already or not, I found Rosamonte Especial to be much more pleasant and enjoyable to drink. Especially if you’re a beginner as this bag contains friendlier notes mainly consisting of earth and florals.

It’s also not as smoky or bitter, and lasts a long time. Allowing you to enjoy the notes that much more.

Drink it in the morning, afternoon, or evening. Rosamonte Especial will always give you the energy boost you need.

  1. Rosamonte especial tastes extremely smooth to me and if you told me it was a suave yerba and I was blindfolded while drinking it I would believe you. It does blend well with lemon or lime juice for iced yerba mate.

  2. Rosamonte “Special Selection” yerba mate is THE BEST mate for the price you will find anywhere.
