In the past, I’ve written guides on how to prepare yerba mate traditionally, in a french press, and in a coffee maker. Now, today’s post is going to be on how to make yerba mate in a tea pot.
Although I don’t prefer drinking yerba mate this way, it’s an easy alternative when you don’t have a gourd and bombilla.
And to tell you the truth, it’s extremely simple to do.
If you already know how to prepare other teas in a tea pot, then using it for yerba mate is no different.
Here’s what you need…
- A teapot (ideally with a strainer or infuser)
- And looseleaf yerba mate
For best results, you want to go with a bag that’s sin palo. This type of yerba mate contains only leaves (no stems or dust). Today, I’ll be using Taragui Sin Palo.
Now, once you have everything together, let’s begin preparing your mate…

How To Make Yerba Mate In A Tea Pot
Step 1:
Add 1 teaspoon (or around 5 grams) of yerba to your strainer for every 8 ounces of water.
Step 2:
Pour room temperature water over all the leaves and wait at least a minute for it to get saturated.
Step 3:
Once time has passed, pour in hot water at around 160-170ºF (71-77ºC).
For convenience, I just used my Keurig machine to fill my tea pot with hot water.
Step 4:
Now, let the tea steep for at least 5 minutes before serving. For a stronger brew, steep for longer.
Step 5:
Serve tea in a mug and enjoy!
How Does It Taste?
The taste is the same as when brewed in a french press or coffee maker. But compared to yerba mate with a gourd and bombilla, it’s completely different.
Yerba mate from a tea pot is mild and light throughout. It still has the same earthy flavor, but it’s nowhere near as strong.
For beginners getting into the world of yerba mate, this is a great way to start.
But if you’re used to drinking mate traditionally, you might be dissatisfied with its strength.
Final Words
Using a tea pot to brew yerba mate is a great alternative to a gourd and bombilla.
If that’s all you have lying around and you don’t want to purchase extra equipment, then this will be convenient for you. It’s also great for short sessions when you don’t have enough time to prepare yerba mate traditionally.
So if you want to give it a try, just follow the steps laid out in this post.
Or in other words, prepare it like you would any tea.
