Do you want to learn how to use yerba mate to blast off fat? Did you hear about how great it was for weight loss, and now want to try it yourself? Then this post will show you how I dropped 10 pounds in 3 weeks with the help of yerba mate.
Now before I get into it, here’s what this post IS NOT…
As with a lot of weight loss and fat loss tips and tricks, yerba mate isn’t one of them. Simply drinking this every day isn’t going to make you magically lose weight. Sorry, but that’s wishful thinking.
However, it does aid you in the weight loss process.
I’ll tell you how in a second, but I want to clear up some things first because there’s a lot of inaccurate claims being made from other articles. As well as some BS testimonials of how people lost weight. So make sure you read this part carefully…
Yerba Mate Weight Loss – What It IS NOT
Whether you’re reading this and planning to drink actual yerba mate tea or pop yerba mate pills, the following relates to both of you (especially you pill poppers)…
Yerba mate will NOT burn off the pounds of fat you’re looking for. The claim that it’s thermogenic and can raise your metabolism, whether that’s true or false, won’t do a damn thing.
Simply drinking mate or taking the pills WITHOUT exercising and a good diet, won’t make you lose weight.
So if you don’t already have those two things down, and don’t plan on it, read no further. The rest of this post won’t help you.
But if you already exercise and have a semi-clean diet, you will reap the many weight loss benefits of yerba mate.
What are the benefits?
Read on…
Yerba Mate Weight Loss Benefits
Now that you know what yerba mate IS NOT when it comes to weight loss, here’s what yerba mate CAN do for you to burn fat. Reminder, this is not just from my experience. These benefits are caused by the chemical compounds found in yerba mate.
And for those who drink mate already, you will find these things true for yourself.
There are 3 things yerba mate can do to help you lose weight.
Let’s start with the first…
Suppress Appetite
This is a topic many articles have taken over the top. And what I mean by this is that they claim yerba mate will prevent sugar cravings and from eating unhealthy food, this is completely false and is exaggerated. Yerba mate will not prevent sugar cravings and you from eating that delicious, greasy double cheeseburger. What it does do is suppress your overall appetite. When you’re hungry, drinking yerba mate will make you feel less hungry.
That’s it.
As long as you have some self-control, you can go hours without eating after drinking mate. And obviously, the less you eat, the less weight you gain.
Aids Digestion
I was hesitant about putting this as a weight loss benefit because it sort of isn’t, but it is at the same time.
Yerba mate has laxative properties (because of its caffeine content) that help eliminate waste. And the less food stored in your stomach, the less you weigh. This is more of a health benefit, rather than a weight loss benefit. But you can’t argue that it doesn’t make you weigh less. Yerba mate can also help get rid of water weight.
Boosts Energy
As already stated, yerba mate contains caffeine. And caffeine gives you energy. So although this isn’t a direct cause of weight loss, this will help you tremendously during exercise. Many people, myself included, will drink yerba mate before heading to the gym. This grants you the energy to exercise harder and for longer. Which in return, burns more calories and leads to weight loss.
Now these 3 benefits may not seem like a big deal by themselves. But when working together with consistent exercise and dieting, you can get some amazing results.
I was able to lose 10 pounds in 3 weeks.
Here’s how you can do the same.
How To Lose 10 Pounds In 3 Weeks With Yerba Mate
First things first, you need the foundation…
- Exercise
- Diet
- And some yerba mate
I haven’t tried the pills. So if you’re wondering which is best, I can only suggest the actual thing.
For beginners, Cruz De Malta is my most recommended. And was what I drank during my 3 weeks of weight loss.
Now that you got your tea, this is what I did to help me lose 10 pounds…
Me at 160 pounds
First thing every morning, I would wake up and drink yerba mate. I found drinking it in the morning is best for the aforementioned benefits:
- It helps you pee and poo which quickly makes you feel more refreshed and light on your feet.
- It prevents hunger in the morning. I don’t even need to eat breakfast when I wake up. Yerba mate IS my breakfast.
- And since I workout in the morning, it gives me the energy to lift heavier weights even without food in my system.
So after my breakfast, I would head to the gym high on caffeine and ready to go.
I would go 5 times a week.
- Monday – Back/Bis
- Tuesday – Chest/Tris
- Wednesday – Legs/Abs
- Thursday – Back/Bis
- Friday– Chest/Tris
On the weekends, I’ll rest or do some light walking.
Repeating this routine while drinking yerba mate every day for three straight weeks has allowed me to look like this…
Me at 150 pounds
As far as diet goes, I wasn’t strict about it.
The only thing I was strict about was my daily protein and caloric intake.
To lose weight, you have to eat at a caloric deficit. An easy way to calculate this is by multiplying your body weight by 15 then subtracting it by 500. In my case at 160 pounds, I would need 1900 calories to lose weight. A good portion of these calories came from protein to prevent muscle loss. I would eat 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (or 160 grams total).
Because I was unintentionally intermittent fasting (16+ hours without eating), I’d have two meals a day with some snacking once in a while. I’d have my first meal after I returned home from the gym and my second meal a couple of hours later.
My diet consisted mostly of meat (lots of it), eggs, rice, vegetables, and protein shakes.
Final Words
Does yerba mate help with weight loss?
YES!
Big time.
It’s what helped me eat less, go to the gym, and lift with more energy.
Again, just drinking yerba mate alone won’t make you lose weight. But if you can drink it every morning, exercise 3 days a week minimum, and follow a simple high-protein diet, then the fat will melt right off.

Great!!!
Is it works for diabetes patients.
Hey Clay,
Does what work for diabetes? Yerba mate or the program?
There are a few studies suggesting yerba mate helps regulate glucose levels. As for the program, yes, the diet is mainly low carb which is the best thing a diabetic can do for their health.
Again, I am not a doctor, this is just from my own research. Please consult your health professional first. Thanks for the comment!

There are so many packaging for the tea . Which one do I get to help with the weight loss ? I already exercise and eat right. Can you post a photo of the package ? Thanks !
Hey Heidi!
All yerba mate teas provide very similar effects (and will give you the three listed above). But for someone new to yerba mate, I typically recommend Cruz De Malta, which I’ve already reviewed and posted pictures of. Click here to check it out!
Hope this helps, and good luck on your journey!

Thanks for the post! I recently started drinking Yerba mate that I cold brew and immediately noticed the sustained energy. I don’t even take preworkout now if my workouts are following my Yerba mate in the morning. But what led me to your post was googling the weight loss effects it has because this was not why I stated drinking it as I’m already at an ideal weight but I’m noticing a very prominent appetite suppressant in the mornings that allows me to do a fast without problem. Though, I have been adding a splash of almond milk to mine since I can’t get into the taste of Yerba mate alone.
Hey Lara,
Thanks for the comment!
I’ve done the same and replaced any preworkout supplements with just some good yerba mate. And yup, it makes fasting super easy. Don’t worry about the taste, you’ll get used to it eventually and start to embrace it. How long have you been drinking?
Cheers,
Darren
Hello
My name is Christian and I am a 17 years old student who is making a website about yerba mate. On the main page I will have 3 facts about the tea and one of them happens to be the information I found on your website.
Is it okay if I use that information with a reference to your site?
Thank you in advance.
Hi Christian,
Go ahead!
Cheers,
Darren
