Care / Maintenance

Mate Gourds
Before your first use, it's best to cure your mate gourd (if made of calabash or wood) to remove debris and reduce bitter tannins.

  • Fill with hot water (170°F / 77 °C) and steep for 20 minutes.
  • Pat dry with a paper towel.
  • Dry gourd on its side in a well-ventilated spot (a fan works best).

Bombillas
New bombillas should be cleaned to remove any potential manufacturing residue.

  • Boil in water with 1 tbsp baking soda for 10–15 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

Yerba Mate
Keep yerba mate in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. For green yerba, store in the fridge/freezer to preserve freshness and prevent degradation. An airtight container works best.

I received my starter kit and was impressed by the high quality materials and the flavorful yerba mate. As a newbie, I found the taste a bit bold at first so it definitely takes some getting used to. I'm still fine tuning the strength that works best for me, but let me tell you, after that first sip, I felt like I could run a marathon. Now I understand why so many people are hooked!

Thanks for giving our starter kit a shot, Erick! We're glad you enjoyed it. And yes, for a first timer, yerba mate will typically be a bit strong but you quickly get accustomed with each mate. We also recommend a lower water temp of 140F to reduce the bitterness, and then work your way up from there!
