This calabash mate gourd keeps the yerba mate ritual simple, traditional, and authentic. Handmade in Argentina from a natural calabash, it features a plain gourd paired with a handcrafted leather base for stability and rustic character.

This "criollo" style is a classic, lightweight, easy-to-hold gourd that makes you appreciate its simplicity. Plus, with the leather base, you can rest the gourd at an angle when steeping to better ensure a stable mountain of mate.

Some calabashes have a more flared opening, while others have a straighter shape, giving each piece its own unique look.

Capacity: Mostly small and medium
Dimensions (approx.): Base: 3.5 x 2.5in. Calabash: 3 x 3in.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please follow these specific curing instructions:fill with used (slightly damp) yerba and leave it for 12-24 hours. Do NOT add water. Then scoop out the yerba, rinse, and leave to dry. We have noticed these are more susceptible to cracks due to being saturated with water too fast. This method helps prevent that from happening.

Can I Pick Out A Specific Gourd?
Unfortunately, no. Calabashes are 100% natural and each one is unique in shape, size, and capacity. In addition, the virola (metal rim) are all handmade and each mate comes with a different design.

The best we can do is give a range of a gourd's dimensions and capacity. If you prefer a size, you may always reach out with your request and we'll do our best to accommodate, but can't guarantee it.

How To Cure Mate Gourds
Before using, it's best to cure your mate to remove excess debris and reduce bitter tannins.

  • Fill with hot water (170°F / 77 °C) and steep for 20 minutes.
  • Pat dry with a paper towel.
  • Dry gourd on its side in a well-ventilated spot (a fan works best).

How To Clean Them
Calabash gourds should be cleaned immediately after use with only warm water. Rinse out all the yerba and pat dry. Do not use soap or other cleaning products as this can be absorbed and affect the taste.

How To Prevent Mold
Mold is caused by how the mate dries after being used (not an issue with the gourd itself). For best prevention, dry your gourd in a well-ventilated room (by a fan for best results). Do not mistake natural green staining from the yerba for mold. Mold will appear as fuzzy white/green spots and produce an off smell.
