FAQs
FAQs
Can I Pick Out A Specific Gourd?
Unfortunately, no. Calabashes are 100% natural and each one is unique in shape, size, and capacity. In addition, the virola (metal rim) are all handmade and each mate comes with a different design.
The best we can do is give a range of a gourd's dimensions and capacity. If you prefer a size, you may always reach out with your request and we'll do our best to accommodate, but can't guarantee it.
How To Cure Mate Gourds
Before using, it's best to cure your mate to remove excess debris and reduce bitter tannins.
- Fill with hot water (170°F / 77 °C) and steep for 20 minutes.
- Pat dry with a paper towel.
- Dry gourd on its side in a well-ventilated spot (a fan works best).
How To Clean Them
Calabash gourds should be cleaned immediately after use with only warm water. Rinse out all the yerba and pat dry. Do not use soap or other cleaning products as this can be absorbed and affect the taste.
How To Prevent Mold
Mold is caused by how the mate dries after being used (not an issue with the gourd itself). For best prevention, dry your gourd in a well-ventilated room (by a fan for best results). Do not mistake natural green staining from the yerba for mold. Mold will appear as fuzzy white/green spots and produce an off smell.

We're glad to hear you like the CERRO Torpedo! It's one of our personal favorites.
I am very pleased with the purchase of this beautiful torpedo gourd. This gourd is truly handmade art in functional form. The metal rim is an alpaca silver alloy, and the meticulous chiseling on the virola is pleasing to the eye. Virola fits snug to the interior gourd without any gaps. Thick gourd, thick leather, and nice tight stitching. One thing I appreciate about purchasing gourds is that they are all different due to handmade and natural materials. You get one completely unique to you, and purchasing from here, it’s nice to know they are sourced from quality artisans. Also, this business has been pleasant to work through promptly answered questions. I can tell the owner takes pride in this business, so I know the products and customer service will be of quality.
