The JOYA Imperial Calabash Mate Gourd is a premium traditional mate gourd made with a natural Brazilian calabash, rich brown leather wrap, sturdy leather feet, and a decorative chiseled metal rim.
This calabash shape makes it well-suited for all types of yerba mate, especially with finer cuts like ones from Uruguay. Since each gourd is made from natural materials and finished by hand, every JOYA has its own unique shape, size, rim pattern, and character. Getting one means you'll have a one-of-a-kind piece you can fully admire as nobody else in the world will have one like yours.

FAQs
FAQs
Can I Pick Out A Specific Gourd?
Unfortunately, no. Calabashes are 100% natural and each one is unique in shape, size, and capacity. In addition, the virola (metal rim) are all handmade and each mate comes with a different design.
The best we can do is give a range of a gourd's dimensions and capacity. If you prefer a size, you may always reach out with your request and we'll do our best to accommodate, but can't guarantee it.
How To Cure Mate Gourds
Before using, it's best to cure your mate to remove excess debris and reduce bitter tannins.
- Fill with hot water (170°F / 77 °C) and steep for 20 minutes.
- Pat dry with a paper towel.
- Dry gourd on its side in a well-ventilated spot (a fan works best).
How To Clean Them
Calabash gourds should be cleaned immediately after use with only warm water. Rinse out all the yerba and pat dry. Do not use soap or other cleaning products as this can be absorbed and affect the taste.
How To Prevent Mold
Mold is caused by how the mate dries after being used (not an issue with the gourd itself). For best prevention, dry your gourd in a well-ventilated room (by a fan for best results). Do not mistake natural green staining from the yerba for mold. Mold will appear as fuzzy white/green spots and produce an off smell.
