Titrayju Yerba Mate Review (How Does It Taste?)

Are you tired of the same popular yerba mate brands you’ve been drinking for the past few months?

Then you want to get your hands on Titrayju.

titrayju

This lowkey, hidden gem of a brand is produced by small independent family-farmers in Misiones, Argentina. And from my experience, these lesser-known brands are usually some of the best.

It’s like eating a local family-run pizzeria compared to a big franchise like Dominos.

Huge difference.

The same goes for Titrayju. You can almost taste the love and care put into this mate within every sip.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, keep reading to learn more about it.

Nose

To the nose, Titrayju gives off a great first impression with its bright and sweet-smelling aroma. Notes of wood, hay, brown sugar and a hint of smokiness fill the air when you shake the bag.

Taste

When I had my first sip of Titrayju, I was blown away. After finishing my 1-pound bag of it, I really wished I had bought another so I can experience more of what it has to offer because this mate delivers notes on top of notes on top of notes.

titrayju

Titrayju starts with a simple earthy and grassy taste like with all yerba mates. But there was something about this one that drew me in. The earthiness wasn’t bitter or off-putting. It was rich, smooth, and tasted like the freshest soil you can find on earth. A prominent baked bread and hay note also sits in the background, perfectly complementing the mate’s earthiness. As I keep sipping, I soon find myself swimming in an ocean of notes ranging from peanuts, dark chocolate, and caramel to grape skins and cedar, to even honey, jasmine flowers, and white pepper. With every refill comes new notes and an emerging sweetness.

Titrayju does have some smoky and sour undertones. But don’t worry, it’s not overbearing in any manner. In fact, it adds an extra element to the overall taste. If you enjoy brands like Kraus, Pipore, and Flor De Lis, you’ll like this one too.

I found this mate to do great in almost any hot temperature. Try the lower range of around 140ºF (60ºC) to experience less sourness and more nutty flavors. Or try it hotter at around 165ºF (74ºC) for more of an earthy spiciness.

Finish

Despite the rainbow of notes Titrayju has, it leaves very little on the finish. Just a slightly sour kick, astringency, pepperiness, nuttiness, and it’s gone after about 10 seconds. But if you brew at hotter temps, the finish is more astringent and lasts a lot longer. So depending on what you like, keep this in mind.

Body/Texture

Titrayju is a light-to-medium bodied mate. It’s not watery nor is it heavy on the palate. It has just enough weight to distinguish it from water. Soft, creamy, and a bit chewy, Titrayju is like a fine wine or spirit that you want to sip and swirl around in your mouth to fully appreciate its essence. Its body gradually weakens with every refill till it’s light and watery.

Cut

titrayju

Titrayju features a beautiful Argentine cut. Leaves are mostly large with varying shades of green and brown. You can find plenty of stems that are either short and wide or long and thin as well. Dust is average with just enough to leave an imprint on your palm and keep the mountain of mate stable, but not enough to where you keep sucking up little bits.

Preparation shouldn’t be an issue with this mate as there’s a lot of large particles to help with filtration. Any bombilla will work.

Cycle

I surprisingly found Titrayju to be a warrior when it comes to duration. This mate has a medium-to-long cycle and keeps most of its flavor throughout its entire lifespan. And that’s just what I hoped for with this brand. With a complex flavor profile, the only thing that could make this better is a long cycle, and I’m easily able to finish about 3/4-1 liter per gourd.

Effect

Every time I take my first sip of Titrayju, I feel the effects immediately. And they’re very noticeable.

My body starts to warm and my head starts feeling light and flowy, while I slowly feel more focused and calm. Compared to other brands, this mate is more on the mild side when it comes to stimulation. Yerba mate is known to relax and energize at the same time but to different degrees. Titrayju leans more on the relaxing side of the spectrum. I never feel jittery when drinking this. And instead of feeling physically energized, it makes me want to stay put and write or read a book.

Although it’s relaxing, I’d still recommend only drinking this during the morning or afternoon.

Titrayju Yerba Mate Review

yerba

Titrayju might not be the best brand for beginners, but it’s definitely a brand every experienced matero will appreciate. It’s not often you come across a mate with such a complex flavor profile, especially coming out of Argentina.

Titrayju is a good mate to get if you ever wanted to enjoy Uruguayan brands, but found them to be too strong or too bitter.

Titrayju is just as flavorful and long-lasting, but with a softer, more palatable strength.
